Something I don't understand about summatory

I have two : \[\sum_{i=0}^{n-1} i ^{2} = (n-1)(n)(2n-1)\]

What is the meaning of i^2 ??

I just want to know what is the meaning of that term...i've tried to understand from other things and nothing...i've seen 1, i, i^2...but I dont understand what it means
