|x| means the distance of x from zero, so find the value of x (if you even need to calculate it) and make it positive. To do this problem I would start by calculating the last absolute value because that is the only one that needs to be calculated. |5-7|=|2|=2 Then take all of your other values out of the absolute values (||) by making them postive So you should have -(9)-(4)-(3*2) You leave the negatives that are outside of the || alone because they are not part of the absolute value -9-4-6=-19
