A baseball team won 10 games and lost 7 games. Approximately what percent of games did the team win?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, document the information that you are given: Games won: 10 Games lost: 7 Total games: 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I thought also, but there are 17 games and 7 of them are lost. How do you find that out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

RULE: Convert a word problem into a math equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Translate words to math symbols: "What percent" : p % "of": x (multiply) "games (the total games): 17 "did the team win?: "= 10"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p = what we are trying to find: what percent of games the team won

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now just write the equation and solve for p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the equation is: "What percentage of the games did the team win? "p x 17 = 10"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FINAL STEP: After you have solved for p, which will be a decimal, convert it to a percent which is what the answer asks for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be 10/17 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically the question just asks what is games won/total games?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! One last step-they ask you to give your answer as a percentage

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 10/17 = .58 Do you know how to write .58 as a percent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

59% !! thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

58* lol
