The South seceded from the United states because of the North's views on slavery. The South needed the slave work force for economic reasons and the North did not want it at all. There were other reasons other than the slavery issue, for instance, the South wanted to reserve all the undefined powers to the individual states. Also, the North wanted to develop a high tariff that protected the Northern manufacturer.
