Many of the songs from ancient times through the Renaissance were built on the melodies of previous songs. What were the advantages for composers of using a melody that had already been created?

If they had already been composed and used they didn't have to worry about persecution from the Catholic Church. Upon this, they could create new harmonies, improve upon previous composers, and learn to create their own melodies.
