Hi I have two problems that I am very confused on. For one problem all I am given is the angle of incidence (degrees) which is 30.0, the angle of refraction (degrees) 19.47 and the sine of the angle of incidence 0.500. and i need to figure out the sine of the angle of refraction and the index of refraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n1 sin(@1) = n2 sin(@2) where n1 and n2 are indices of refraction and @1 and @2 are angles of incidence and refraction.

I dont understand @douglaswinslowcooper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n1 is the refractive index of the medium from which the light comes. n1 = 1.00 for air or vacuum. @1 (theta1) is the angle of incidence, the angle between the incoming ray and the normal to the surface. n2 is the refractive index of the medium into which the ray passes through the boundary, and its angle of refraction is @2 with respect to a line perpendicular to the surface interface. Let me know what part is still unclear, if any.

Can you put it into a equation.... cause I do not understand it at all.. @douglaswinslowcopper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, n1 sin(@1) = n2 sin(@2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont get how I plug my stuff into that... @douglaswinslowcooper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n1 is index of refraction of medium containing ray incident at angle @1 from the normal (perpendicular) direction n2 is the index of refraction of the medium into which the ray is defracted at an angle @2 from the normal. Substitute values given to get unknowns sin(19.47) can be gotten from calculator or tables.

so the sine of angle refraction is .3? how do I get the index of refraction? @douglaswinslowcooper
