"Emancipation from the bondage of the soil is no freedom for the tree." What does this mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it means multiple things but mostly it means freedom from one thing won't fix everything. If a tree is no longer bound to the soil it might be uprooted and fall over. Without the soil the tree can't survive because the soil provided nutrients. But maybe the soil isn't the only thing holding the tree down, gravity exists and then that freedom from the soil doesn't seem to help.
