a sled weighs 2 newtons. it is set in motion over a frictionless surface by a bettery-powered fan with a weight of 1 newton. After the battery has discharged, the sled is coasting at a speed of 12 m/s. What was the maginitude of the horizontal force exerted on the sled while the fan was turning?

OpenStudy (roadjester):

This question is from the early chapters of your book correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's a custom question by my teacher

OpenStudy (roadjester):

ok, what chapter are you on? what topic?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

force

OpenStudy (roadjester):

What is newton's 3rd law say?

OpenStudy (roadjester):

what does*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

OpenStudy (roadjester):

Wait, the force of the sled is 2N downward, and the fan is 1N downward also, you're not given enough information since a fan displaces the air and it's the fan spinning that pushes the sled....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct. i was thinking the same too because the we have no velocity for the fan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have another question..dont go yet

OpenStudy (roadjester):

And you can't exactly apply conservation of linear momentum here either.
