Lurking variable. It can't be controlled because the researcher doesn't know about it. The classic example is noticing that there is an increase in the amount of ice cream sold at the same time that there is an increase in drowning deaths. Does ice cream cause drowning??? The lurking variable is hot weather, which affects both of the observed increases.
