I have a question for the book: Walk Two Moons, by: Sharon Creech Why does Sal pray to trees? A. She is imitating her mother. B. She is imitating her grandmother. C. She thinks it is easier because trees are nearly always nearby. D. She thinks it is easier than finding a church all the time.

She said that it is easier to pray to trees because they are all around her and she can see them. She might like to do this because her mother loved all things about nature, or maybe it is because her middle name is tree.

1. What reasons do Gramps and Sal’s father give Sal for going on this trip? According to Sal, what are the real reasons? Why might the real reasons not have been spoken?
Gramps said we’ll see the whole ding-dong country. Father said Gram couldn’t read a map and that Gram and Gramps couldn’t be trusted. Real reasons are that Gram and Gramps wanted to see momma, they knew I wanted to see momma, and dad probably wanted to be alone with Mrs. Cadaver.

2. How does Sal feel about Mrs. Cadaver? Why do you think she feels this way?
Sad doesn’t care for her and doesn’t want to like her. A possible reason she feels this way is because Sal’s worried Mrs. Cadaver will take her dad away or try to replace her mother.

3. What does Sal notice about Phoebe’s parents that reminds her of the Pickfords, her mother’s parents? Do you think that she finds either couple very likeable? Explain.
The Winterbottom’s spoke quietly, in short sentences and sat up straight as they ate. They were extremely polite and soooo RESPECTABLE.

No, this is not advice Phoebe follows. She passes judgments on others often. For example, she judges Mrs. Cadaver, Mary Lou’s family, the lunatic, etc.

5. What does Sal’s tendency to flinch when someone touches her suggest about her character?
Sal started to draw away from others since her mother left. Maybe she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone else and lose them.

6. What about Mrs. Winterbottom gave Sal the impression that she wasn’t too happy with being a housewife?
When Mrs. Winterbottom mentioned the pies she baked, no one commented, and she sighed. Mr. Winterbottom ignored her when she told him about buying muesli, and she sighed again. When she mentioned going back to work, no one commented.

7. What was Sal watching when she realized that it was okay for her to be happy without her mother?
A newborn calf wobble on its thin legs

She is blind. He cane was thick and gnarled. It had a cobra’s head carved into it.

11. Explain how Salamanca got her name.
Sal’s full name is Salamanca Tree Hiddle. Her mom thought Salamanca was the name of the tribe her great-great grandmother belonged, but it was really Seneca. Tree comes from your basic tree because her mom thought they were beautiful.

12. What did Ben do to Sal that confused her?
He kissed her collar bone

13. What does Sal like to pray to? Why do you think she does this?
She likes to pray to trees. She said that it is easier to pray to trees because they are all around her and she can see them. She might like to do this because her mother loved all things about nature, or maybe it is because her middle name is tree.

14. What was the most precious thing in the world to Gramps (besides Gram)? Why do you think it is so precious?
The marriage bed-because the bed first belonged to his parents, he and all of his brothers were born in that bed, and because his father and brothers surprised him by setting it up in his new house on his wedding night
