This quote means that people do not read novels to learn something new, expand their mind, or to improve themselves. From this, a conclusion can be made that people read for entertainment purposes (if they aren't too busy watching tv that is!)

I would have to do some searching, but try looking at bestseller lists and check how many instructional books sell compared to entertaining books.
