the intersection(s) of a graph drawn in a cartesian plane is/are the solution(s) of that graph. so if the graph intersected the x-axis at two points those intersecting points are your solutions. if the graph has not touched the x-axis it means it has no solution. for example in that equation you gave for example it touched the x-axis at ponts (-5,0) and (3,0) the values of x's are -5 and 3 for a linear equation you will intersect the x-axis at most by 1 point quadratic= 2 pts cubic= 3 pts quartic= 4 pts etc... ... .
