Subtract both sides by 7/8.  3 and 1/8 will remain. The answer is B

You want to have only x and nothing else on the left side.  To do so, you need to subtract the 7/8 from the left side and subtract it from the other side to compensate.  When you take 4-7/8 you get x all by itself on one side and then 3 and 1/8 on the other, stating that x=3 and 1/8
