There are two main parts to the math subject known as calculus. Differential calculus deals with rates of change, answering questions like how fast is a population growing or what will be the velocity of an object dropped off a building when it hits the ground. Integral calculus gives us tools to determine areas and volumes, and solve problems like determining the amount of energy required to accomplish a task. The two parts of the subject might be analogized to the functions of a speedometer (differential calculus) and odometer (integral calculus). They're tied together by the fundamental theorem of calculus.
