x = 1 y = 2 x = 2 y = 0 x = 3 y = -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is -4. Here's how I got it: Locate x = 1 --> (1,2) Locate x = 3 --> (3,-6) Find the slope.

Well to find the average rate of change plug it into the formula: y2 - y1/x2 - x1 -6 - 2/3 - 1 -8/2 -4 So the answer is -4

The word "slope" is another way to say "rate of change" :)

It's asking for the average rate of change between x = 1 and x = 3. So we only use those numbers.
