Freed and Saima are standing 45 miles apart and they start walking toward each other at the exact same moment. If Freed's speed is 4 miles per hour and Saima's speed is 5 miles per hour, how many miles has Saima walked when they meet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 ,, 20 ,, 25 ,, 30 ???????!! ANS??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mertsj Please Help!!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The will both walk the same number of minutes. Do you agree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Well, number of hours.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. they will walk at the same time

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Freed will walk 4x miles and Saima will walk 5x miles and together they will walk 45 miles.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

4x+5x=45

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mertsj):

x=5 Freed walks 20 miles and Saima walks 25 miles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the formula for distance is: D = Rate x Time

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

it is. Saima walks at 5 miles/hour, for 5 hours.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That is correct. And x represents the time they are walking.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That's why I said that they will walk for the same length of time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

X represents miles??

OpenStudy (mertsj):

And x represents the time they are walking. x represents TIME

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Specifically x represents NUMBER OF HOURS.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhkkkkaayyyy !!! Got it !! THANKS!!!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

YW

OpenStudy (anonymous):
