Which of the following tables represents a proportional relationship? x 2 5 6 7 y 6 8 10 12 x 2 4 6 8 y 6 12 18 24 x 2 3 4 5 y 4 6 8 12 x 2 5 8 14 y 6 12 18 24

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

a proportional relationship will be one where \(y=kx\) for some value of \(k\).

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

also known as direct variation, and that constant \(k\) is called the constant of variation. A proportional relationship will also be a straight line if graphed, and the slope of the graph is \(k\).

So it b @whpalmer4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whpalmer4

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Well, what is the value of \(k\) if it is the second choice?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks it b @OrangeMaster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

was it b @Vonte12

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

answer my questions, and you'll know the answer with 100% certainty...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whpalmer4

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, good to know.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could use whpalmer4's method, but I used common sense. If you multiply each x value by 3, it equal the y value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did i got it now @whpalmer4 @OrangeMaster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok @whpalmer4 i was jp :/

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

yes, so \(k=3\). Each x value * 3 gives the corresponding y value. If they all fit, that is the correct answer.
