This is easier than it looks; you can actually apply the pythagorean theorem (a squared + b squared = c squared) the distance is the hypotenuse of a right triangle where the height is the difference in y coordinates and the base is the difference in the x coordinates. so for the 2 points listed (-2,3) & (1,-5) the difference in x's is 3, and the difference in y's is 8. so square both of those and add them together, you end up with 9+64 = 73. so the distance is the square root of 73.
