sqrt root of -$423751.822100314 my calculator gave me error

OpenStudy (nikato):

Because calculators can't do square root of a negative number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.. how do you figure out then?

OpenStudy (nikato):

So sqrt of -1 is i Then just find the square root of the number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mmm...

OpenStudy (nikato):

And you don't have to plug in -. Since you "took it out" So you're looking at sqrt of -1 times sqrt of 423751.822...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh.. so i get rid of - ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{423751.822100314} \] You have to take out the - to be able to find the square root. Once you do that solve the problem, which equals to 650.962 Now that you have the answer you will place an "i" behind the number. You do this with all negative numbers that you are trying to get the square root out of. So your answer is 650.962i

Are you familiar with statistics?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I haven't taken that class yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks!
