Sci.Not. starts with a single-digit number, then a decimal point, then the rest of the non-zero digits. e.g. 12000 = 1.2x10^4. To get the exponent on the 10, count the number of digits after the first. In other words, how many places must you move the decimal point from the right of the number to get it to the right of the first digit?
