Why was the Manhattan Project created?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The short answer is that it was it was to create an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany could because of intel that suggested they were working on one. In the end, the Nazis were years away from actually getting one, so instead of using it against them, we used it against Japan to swiftly end the war in the Pacific.

Thanks! that's all I needed! I just have a few more questions about the Manhattan project, do you think you could help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the others I need help with: What is the historical context of your event? What were the causes of your event? What were its effects? How does this event connect to the modern world? What lasting influence has the event had on American government, culture, society, or interaction with the world?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which event are the other questions focusing on? Is it the creation of the a-bomb?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by event, it is meant to be the Manhattan Project, not a specific topic within that subject

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, for historical context, the Manhattan Project took place in WW2. The causes were what I said earlier, the US believed that Nazi Germany was developing an atomic weapon. Einstein had even written Roosevelt on the dangers of ignoring such an effort. As for effects...massive. People point to the Trinity Test as the start of the Atomic Age. Once we knew how to split the atom in a weapon, there was no turning back. The US is, to this day, the only nation that has ever used atomic weapons in war. Atomic policy has shaped the Cold War. It's one of the reasons, if not THE reason why the Cold War never went "hot" between the US and the Soviets who had also developed atomic weapons. For nearly half a century, nuclear brinksmanship influenced countries, allies, policy changes, and political chess around the world. All because of what the Manhattan Project had started.
