In what ways were the Soviet Union and the United States different during the Cold War?

There's a lot of difference between both the Soviet Union and the US, but the short answer is that ideologically, the US was for democracy and supported a capitalist economy. The Soviets, on the other hand, were controlled by a single party, the Communist Party, and had a command economy. It was democracy versus communism, or at least that was the byline of the Cold War.
