What did China want in the Korean War?

At the beginning of the war, the North chased the South almost to the tip of the peninsula. Once the US got involved, we chased the North back. So far back, in fact, that we were at the Yalu River which made China very nervous. We also had many in the US calling for the US armed forces to continue into China. This is one fo the reasons MacArthur got fired by Truman. The Chinese intervened with massive troop incursions and drove us back across the old border between North and South.

Korea has always had a testy relationship with China for ancient reasons. The Soviet Union actually shares a small section of the border with North Korean.
