Let width = x
then length = 3x -1
area = l*w
ATQ 30 ft^2 = xft*(3x-1)ft
30 = 3x^2 - x
3x^2 - x - 30 = 0
3x^2 -10x + 9x - 30 = 0
x(3x - 10) +3(3x - 10) = 0
(x + 3)(3x - 10) = 0
so x = -3 or x = 10/3
length cannot be negative
so x = 10/3 = 3.33333.....
