A right triangle has an angle that measures 34, and the adjacent side measures 17. What is the length of the hypotenuse to the nearest tenth? 20.5 25.2 30.4<-- 34

OpenStudy (phi):

I assume this is trig. What formula did you use ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it is trig -.- I tried co sine , I really guessed I wasn't sure on which to use. I decided 30.4 seemed like the best answer

OpenStudy (phi):

Draw a right triangle |dw:1394056330377:dw| now put in the numbers

OpenStudy (phi):

Let's label one of the angles 34º |dw:1394056399383:dw|

OpenStudy (phi):

next put in this info: the adjacent side measures 17. which side is the adjacent side to 34º angle ?

OpenStudy (phi):

remember, there are 3 sides: they hypotenuse (opposite the 90 angle) the opposite side and the adjacent side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh silly me it's 20.5

OpenStudy (phi):

|dw:1394056524983:dw|

OpenStudy (phi):

cos(34)= 17/x or x= 17/cos(34)
