Roger could never explain to his father his passion for birds. In fact, he didn't really understand it himself until later years. In his teens the mere glimpse of a bird would change Roger's listlessness to fierce intensity. He lived for birds. It was excitement to him just to see them move and fly. There was nothing thoughtful or academic in his interest. It was totally spontaneous and he could not control it.
