Hmmm... I believe the first one should be because of the advances in technology. The first tanks were used, first planes, first chemical weapons, first effective machine guns. The resulting death toll was appalling. as the commanders failed to adapt tactics to changes in technology. They used full on frontal assaults against entrenched positions with far deadlier weapons than ever before. It took them 2 years to change tactics. This resulted in the trench warfare the war was known for, and the high death rates. Because of the weapons, it changed the way wars were fought. They no longer used the Napoleonic antiquated strategies they entered the war using.
