Select the correct function with the following transformations of the graph of y = x^2: shifted left 1 and up 3.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The one with the vertex of the parabola at (-1,3) instead of (0,0).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = (x - 1)^2 + 3 is this the answer?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Does the vertex look like it ends up where the two grid lines I've added to the graph intersect? If so, then that is the correct answer.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Hint: the parabola equation in vertex form is \[y = a(x-h)^2 + k\] where the vertex is at \((h,k)\) Those pesky - signs are the work of the devil, or so mathematicians used to believe :-)
