SOMEONE PLZ HELP W. THIS!!?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve 5 over x minus 5 equals the quantity of x over x minus 5, minus five fourths for x and determine if the solution is extraneous or not.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

5 / (x -5) = x / (x -5) -5/4 Is that the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, that's it.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

5 = x -5(x-5)/4

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

5 = x (-5x-25) / 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, do I simplify further from here?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

5 -x = (-5x -25) /4 20 -4x = -5x -25 20 + x = -25 x = -45

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I don't know if that is correct or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm, well my choices are: x = -5, extraneous x = -5, non-extraneous x = 5, extraneous x = 5, non-extraneous

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

well if those are the choices, I must have done something wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know, I would have known how to solve this if it wasn't for the 4, because then you could multiply each part for the common denominator or something like that.:/ Idk how to solve this..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should I just take an educated guess?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Maybe I can get rid of the 4 in the fraction. 20/(x-5) = 4x/(x-5) -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, cool and then divide the 20 by 4x?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

No I think I solved it in my last post.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I'm guessing if x=-5 then the left side = -2 the right fraction = 2 then x= -5 ??????????????? I guess so.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes, it's just that simple -- LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, yea 'simple'.:) I'm taking a *52* question review test now, so even the simplest of problems are being tricky..lol thanks for you help:)

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

u r welcome
