Beth Wood tells her nursing students that it is important to monitor patients’ blood pressure when they are receiving verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). What is the function of calcium in cardiac action potentials? What is the function of calcium in muscle contraction? State 3 other reasons why BP needs to be monitored when giving this drug.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

calcium is the vital ion required for muscle contraction and relaxation...it binds to actin and myosin which bring about sliding of the 2 flaments over each other resulting in a contraction...and when these ions are taken in the ER again relaxation occurs...
