1. Hitler had a pathological (abnormal) hatred of Jews: he was an anti semite. (anti semitism = specifically hatred of Jews) Hitler managed to convince the Germans that the Jews were 'to blame' for all the problems in the country. At that time, the Jews were living very happily in Germany, and were fully assimilated; they married non Jews, worked with non Jews, etc etc etc. One thing Hitler did was to use the media to brainwash people. He and other Nazis such as Goebbels, created the most spiteful, hateful anti semitic propoganda imaginable, in the form of cartoons showing Jews as 'devils'. Hitler also plugged in to the latent anti semitism that existed in Germany anyway. Christianity has always taught that the Jews killed Jesus, even though it was the Romans that did it. This teaching has led to much anti semitism and Hitler used this in his awful plans. The Jews were also a very vulnerable group: at that time, there was no Jewish homeland, so if Jews were being treated badly, there was nowhere to escape to. Unfortunately, Hitler was not the first dictator to target Jews but certainly, the Nazis went to terrible lengths to achieve their publicly stated goal of wiping out every single Jew in Europe. They murdered six million, through gassing them, burning them, starving them, shooting them and torturing them. In total, during the Holocaust, HALF of world Jewry was destroyed. There is a wonderful book called THE WAVE which is a true story of an experiment that an American History teacher did to show his students the ways that the Nazis managed to turn people against the Jews. I highly recommend you try and order the book, I promise you will find it an amazing read :) Also, remember that Hitler and the Nazis hated other groups too, such as gypsies, and anyone with physical disability. They wanted to create the 'perfect Aryan' race: blonde haired and blue eyed. This, despite the fact that Hitler himself was not blonde! The Holocaust was a 'unique' event, and I use that word for want of a better term, because it was the systematic genocide of a specific religious group; the Jews.
