1. They rely on a backstory (plot is everything)
2. Introduce the detective and culprit early on.
3. Have the murder appear first, then the motive.
4. Detectives must have a trusty partner. (Sherlock and Watson)
5. Detectives use analytic reasoning and rational methods
6. Clues are presented to the reader.
7. The reader is given a chance to solve the mystery ahead of time.
8. The criminal should have a backstory.
9. The ending should resolve all loose ends.
10. The mystery should have a satisfactory twist.
