Paella is a spanish dish made of rice, and can be cooked with shellfish and chicken, and vegetables like paprika, onions and garlic. It's delicious! Yerba Mate is a kind of herb like tea, that is mostly drunk in Argentina an Uruguay. It is a bitter herb with many medicinal benefits. Empanada is a doe filled with something like meat, spinach, mushrooms, cheese and many combinations.
Tapas are small plates of food that are popular in bars in Spain. They were originally (if I remember correctly) designed to sit on top of your drink (often sweet sherry) so flies didn't land in it (hence the name 'tapas'). You can usually find a bar in Northern Spain that will have a number of them for free with any drink you order, and others for a small fee. Many of them include cortezas (sort of like a pork rind and bacon combined), croqeuetas (hand rolled croquettes with chicken or ham), and aceitunas (olves). Some places serve 'tortilla espanola' which is a thick slice of omelet filled with potatoes. However weird this sounds, it is actually quite amazing. When my wife and lived in Spain this was one of our favorite customs!
la tapas means you cover it ,la yerba mate is the dull grass and las empanadas means the pies.
'la tapas' indicates a direct object in front of its verb ('you cover it'). "las tapas" which has the 's' properly denotes the definite article and noun relationship ('the tapas' or 'the small plates of food'). if you're using a translator, be careful b/c they don't know when you are missing a letter. It doesn't look like you're studying indirect objects yet so I'm pretty sure the last response is predicated on a typo.
