Adding onto cupcakes answer of what I know, In January 1865, while Lincoln was still president, the U.S. Congress passed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery. Many Southern states quickly passed laws called the Black Codes, which prevented black people from gaining equal jobs and education. Andrew Johnson became president after the 13th Amendment passed and he supported the efforts of Southern governors to enforce the Black Codes. I just did this in my history not that long ago :p
Those were both good answers
