can someone correctly show me how to calculate the z score

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

do u have the distribution info :- 1) mean 2) standard deviation ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

z-score just tells you "how many standard deviations from mean, a particular observation lies"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mean of 62 standard deviation of 4 and a z score value of 48

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

z score = (observation - mean )/(standard deviation)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

plug ur values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what would the observation be? i plugged in 62-48/4

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats wrong

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

mean = 62 standard deviation = 4 observation = 48

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

z score for observation of 48 = (48-62)/4

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

u should get a NEGATIVE z score

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

D'aww my hunnybear is great with math! Whatever he says is accurate 99% of the time.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

:) lol u mean 10 time im wrong in every 1000 attempts ha... thats a lot of error :}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay try this mean=62 with a SD of 4 find the z score of the value 78 i swear i typed it in right and i got it wrong

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

z score of observed value 78 = (observation - mean) / (standard deviation)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

= (78 - 62)/4

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you wud get a POSITIVE z score this time, cuz ur observation is greater than mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

finally i got it right. now i have to wait for another online retake.. ugh thanks

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

in stats, it is important to appreciate below differences :- 1) if observation is greater than mean, then z score = POSITIVE 2) if observation is less than mean, then z score = NEGATIVE 3) if observation is same as mean, then z score = 0

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good luck ! im sure u wud do great :)
