A carpet bag has flexible sides. You can come down from the North with it empty and stuff lots of money and stuff in it before going home.
Carpetbaggers
Carpetbaggers were Northerns who moved to the South after the Civil War in order to profit from the instability and power vacuum. Carpetbaggers were said to have politically manipulated and controlled former Confederate states for varying periods for their own financial and power gains. They were seen as insidious Northern outsiders with questionable objectives meddling in local politics, buying up plantations at fire-sale prices and taking advantage of Southerners. Confederates were from the South to begin with and found with the south in the Civil War so clearly they were not Northern business men. Scalawags were Southern whites that supported Reconstruction and the Republican Party after the Civil War. So clearly they're not Northern business men either. Suffragists has to do with womens rights which has nothing to do with this.
