Your friend hands you a graph of the engine power statistics of a race car. He says "I know this is a translated graph of either x^2 or x^3, but I can't figure out which one." Using complete sentences, explain to your friend how to tell if it is an even or odd function, and how to determine the amount the graph has been translated.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If the graph is symmetric with respect to the y axis, then it's an even function and it has to be x^2 (not x^3) since x^2 is even. If the graph is symmetric with respect to the origin, then it's an odd function and it has to be x^3 since x^3 is odd.
