Democracy. The essence of democratic government, when you pare away all of the specific characteristics, is rule by the people. In the representative democracies that are found in world governments today, this power is exercised through elected representatives.

Some republics -- like the USA, Germany, Italy, France, South Korea, South Africa, Israel, and Brazil - are democracies. However, some republics -- like Egypt, Iran, China, North Korea, Venezuela, -- give little or no power to the people. Some monarchies are democracies, too, such as: Great Britain, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Japan.
