open the parantheses then simplify lim x-->2 (44-16x)-12/x-2 = lim x-->2 44-16x-12/x-2 = lim x-->2 32-16x/x-2 = lim x-->2 -16(x-2)/x-2 = lim x-->2 -16 = -16
