Here you are given the hypotenuse of the triangle, the adjacent side (y), and the angle (30 degrees). Which trig function relates adjacent side, hypotenuse and the angle? Goal: Find y.
you dont have to yous trig
perhaps not, but would you please let @malehuman01 answer first?
sure
but there is an easier way without trig
I'd welcome you to demonstrate that easier method, but after malehuman01 and I finish.
im cool with that
Thanks. @malehuman01 ?
is there any particular formula to solve for y?
Indeed there is: I was asking you which trig function involves the angle (30 degrees), the hypotenuse (4Sqrt(2)), and the adjacent side (y). Have you learned the 6 basic trig functions yet? sine cosine tangent cotangent secant cosecant ??
sadly.. no
If not (seeing that you mentioned geometry), there are other ways to solve this problem, as our friend @svt2000 has mentioned. Have you heard of "30-60-90 triangles"?
yes
not sure how to apply it though
Great. In that case I'd like to invite @svt2000 back into the picture, as I suspect that this 30-60-90 degree triangle approach is the one he had in mind. I'll keep an eye on this discussion and if necessary will step back in. Is that all right with you?
i would like to say that im a girl...
Yeah definitely, thank you!
oh okay xD
OK! I'm anxious to see how our friend svt2000 handles this. Hope she will guide you thru this step by step and let y ou come up with your own final answer.
ok so in a 30-60-90 triangle there are some special qualities..one of them is that the hypotenuse is 2x the length of the short side. and the longer side is square root of three times the shorter side. i drew a picture... |dw:1394417632396:dw|
