It was after the Civil War and in order to earn admittance back into the Union, Southern states had to rewrite their constitutions in order to address slavery and adopt the same measures that the North did in abolishing it. On the surface, they approved the Constitution for the state. Beneath it, however, was a very different story, and in the next few years, the rights that it granted African Americans were slowly eroded by a series of laws that turned back the clock.
