Help pls?? Solve for x: -3(x + 3) = -3(x + 1) - 5.

OpenStudy (shamil98):

Distribute first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First what you have to do is distribute whatever is outside the parenthesis to whatever is inside the parenthesis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it would be -3x-9=3x-3-5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

question is wrong if we are to find x.. i guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, that is correct so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so after that would it be -3x-9=-3x-8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x on both sides gets cancelled .. isn't it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im so confused after that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think either on LHS or RHS there should not be a negative sign..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@maryta36 yes thats right. then you move the numbers without variables to one side. For example, in your equation, you may want to add -8 to both sides. which would cancel out-8, and add it to -9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be -1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually it would be -1=0. Because there is nothing more that you can do to the equation. Thats right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) 6 b)-6 c)All real numbers d) No solution so it would be no solution right ? so D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not a problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me with something else?
