Two sides of a triangle have lengths 7 and 11. Which inequalities represent the possible lengths for the third side, x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which sides are they? a and b? b and c? or a and c?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

The third side of a triangle must be greater than the difference of the other 2 sides. So side 3 must be > (11-7) or 4. The third side of a triangle cannot be greater than the sum of the other 2 sides. Side 3 must be < (11 + 7) or 18. Therefore: 4 < Side 3 < 18
