Can someone please briefly (it could be long whatever you have time for) explanation of Interpreting and solving linear inequalities OR Interpreting linear expressions? They confuse me.

Parth (parthkohli):

Hello, I can help you with this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plz help

OpenStudy (phi):

Can you post a specific question that we can use as an example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Interpreting and solving linear inequalities: Write an inequality for this statement: 3 times a number x, subtracted from 18, is less than −90

OpenStudy (phi):

part of answering this question has nothing to do with inequalities. you need to be able to do algebra.

OpenStudy (phi):

If you need more "background", you should look at the videos in this section http://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-sixth-grade-math/cc-6th-expressions-and-variables/cc-6th-beginner-equations/v/simple-equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can do algebra it just confuses me ik its: 3x-18 is less than -90. So do you like divide or multiply by something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok ya, Khan is what gave me the question I watched the video twice already. I'll watch it again later and tell you if it helped. Wait...my math teacher is making me do SIXTH GRADE MATH! I do not like that. I can do like most 7th grade math I don't understand y 6th grade math confuses me

OpenStudy (phi):

That looks pretty close. 3 times a number x is 3*x, but we just write 3x (which means 3 times x) but the next step in 3 times a number x, subtracted from 18 I think of that as 3x subtracted from 18 now to interpret what that means, sometimes it is helpful to think using simple numbers (and not letters... until you get good at it) if it said 1 subtracted from 18 do you know what that means ?

OpenStudy (phi):

or how about if the problem was 1 penny subtracted from 18 pennies? or (using take away instead of "subtract" 1 penny taken away from 18 pennies? they all mean 18 -1 or, going back to 3x subtracted from 18 that is 18-3x (3x is taken away from 18)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 18-3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so after we switch the places we...

OpenStudy (phi):

so back to the problem. Write an inequality for this statement: 3 times a number x, subtracted from 18, is less than −90 we got to 18 - 3x is less than -90 we write less than using < the skinny pointy end points at the small side, and the wide part points to the big side 18 - 3x < -90

OpenStudy (phi):

that is an inequality for the statement. It can be simplified, but they did not ask you to do that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That was easy. I feel stupid now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much. This helped alot
