1 and 3 A change in state does not produce a change in mass. You can often "see" a change in mass when you boil water. This is due to matter leaving the liquid water as steam. If you gather all the steam and the remaining water and find that total mass, you will see that no mass was lost.

4 The same is true in any chemical reaction. The only difference is the atoms are rearranging, but no atom is destroyed.

2 This is the correct choice. The only way you can decrease the mass is to remove matter.

The big idea is comes from the law of conservation of mass. "matter can't be created or destroyed"
