The measures of the angles of a triangle can be represented by the expressions x degrees, quantity of x plus twenty degrees, and two times x degrees. Which word best describes the triangle? The triangle is an acute triangle. The triangle is a right triangle. The triangle is an obtuse triangle. There is not enough information to classify the triangle. Points earned on this question: 0

Help @ganeshie8 @Isaiah.Feynman @ikram002p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HELP ANYONE! I just need someone to walk me through it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it isn't obtuse

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Things would be so much simpler if you only knew what the bloody hell x is equal to, yes? ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but I don't

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

You don't, well naturally. (no offense meant, apologies if you took any, I only meant that if you did, you wouldn't post this question ^_^) Anyway, you don't know, but you will know, with a little magic. Incidentally, when you add up all the angles inside a triangle, it's always equal to a certain number of degrees, do you know which?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, 180 degrees

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Brilliant. So add up all those sides, and make them equal to 180.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x doesn't equal 20

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

... how do you get 20? :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=40?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was plugging in numbers

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Don't guess LOL What are the three sides?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

in terms of x is fine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x, x+20, 2x

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Add them up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x+20+180

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

whoa there, where did 180 come from? LOL

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Just add up the three sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops... =180

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Oh okay, typo then. Good. 4x + 20 = 180 Solve for x...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

160 is left over

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

mhmm ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

160 divided by 4= 40

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

So x is 40 right? And no more guessing... this is more efficient, yes? XD x is 40, so what are the other three angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40, 60, 80

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Okay, from these, you can get your answer :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40+60+80= 180

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Yeah, that, but what's the answer to the original question? What kind of triangle is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, acute right?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

That is correct :) Good job, <whatever your name is>

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

See, you CAN do it. All you needed was a little magic. TJ magic XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey, thanks TJ, math is my worst subject

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

May eventually become your best. Good luck, and don't hesitate to post again (as long as you're not just looking for the answer >:) )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not, just need the occaisional shove in the right direction XD

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Amen to that. Well, if you need any more help, just tag me @terenzreignz any time I happen to be online. I'll be seeing you ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

K! Thanks @terenzreignz

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Right. Oh, and pet peeve... know the difference between tagging and just, you know, calling me. tag me with my username @terenzreignz, but please just call me TJ ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

K! Thanks TJ!
