1) The Nationalists (under Chiang Kai-shek) and the Communists (under Mao Zedong) 2) The peasants were the "new heroes" along with soldiers and the youth in propaganda. Everyone else was potentially a target. Artists who were seen as bourgeoise or anti-communist had their work attacked or destroyed. Many intellectuals were pushed into the fields to work. And commune leaders were often purged under some pretense to make way for those seen as more politically reliable.
