I dont remember the exact formula to solve a problem like this, but I always just try to work backwards. $84 with a discount of $12 is $72. 72/84 will give you how much of the price you are still paying so if you subtract that from 100 percent you will get the amount you aren't paying (the discount). So 72/84=.857 1-.857=.143 14.3% is the discount. You can check this by multiplying 84 x .143.
