(s - w) = plane speed against the wind (s + w) = plane speed with the wind 5(s - w) = 1170 ---> s - w = 1170/5 4.5(s + w) = 1170 --> s + w = 1170/4.5 s - w = 234 s + w = 260 -----------add 2s = 494 s = 247 ===> plane speed in still air 247 - w = 234 247 - 234 = w 13 = w ==> wind speed is 13 mph check.. 5(s - w) = 1170 5(247 - 13) = 1170 5(234) = 1170 1170 = 1170 (correct) oh crap...I think I just found the answer... plane speed in still air = 247 mph wind speed = 13 mph
