lets call your two numbers x and y

add them together and you get 10, so x+y=10, but subtract one from the other, and you get -2, so x-y=-2

you can solve via substitution or elimination, but elimination is easier in this case. (x+y=10) +(x-y=-2) 2x+y-y=10-2 2x=8 x=4

then plug 4 into one of the equations for x, and solve for y. x+y=10 4+y=10 y=6
